01 Overview
This Privacy Policy describes how the Mei team (“Mei”, “we”, “us”) handles information when you add the Mei Discord bot to a server, interact with its commands, or visit this website. It is written to align with the Discord Developer Terms of Service and the Discord Developer Policy.
Mei is an independent project and is not operated by, affiliated with, or endorsed by Discord Inc. Discord processes your account data under its own Privacy Policy; this policy only covers what Mei itself stores and processes.
02 Data we collect
Mei collects only the data needed to operate the features a server enables.
Identifiers
- User IDs — to associate levels, economy balances, profiles, ticket authorship, moderation history, whitelist entries and preferences with the right account.
- Server (guild) IDs — to keep each server’s configuration, modules and records isolated from every other server.
- Channel and role IDs — to know where to send logs, welcome messages, ticket panels, temporary voice channels and rank announcements.
- Message IDs — only where a feature must reference a specific message, such as a reaction-role panel, giveaway entry message or ticket transcript anchor.
Command usage metadata
- Command name, the server and channel it was used in, the invoking user’s ID, and a timestamp.
- Coarse technical diagnostics such as shard ID, latency samples and error codes, used for reliability and abuse prevention.
- Feature-specific data you intentionally create: playlist names and track references, ticket transcripts you generate, giveaway entries, confession submissions, level and economy totals, family and marriage links, and anti-nuke whitelist entries.
Where a command accepts free text — a playlist name, a welcome message, a confession, a ticket description — that text is stored only to deliver the feature and is attached to the relevant server record.
03 How we use data
Data is processed strictly to execute the commands and automations you request, including:
- Playing audio and maintaining queues, playlists and 24/7 voice sessions.
- Tracking XP, levels, economy balances, shop purchases and social profiles.
- Enforcing anti-nuke rules, whitelists, panic mode, night mode and automod filters.
- Creating, claiming, transcribing and closing support tickets.
- Sending welcome messages, autoroles, logs and giveaway results to the channels you configure.
- Maintaining temporary voice channels and their ownership.
- Diagnosing errors, preventing abuse, and honouring blacklists or legal obligations.
We do not sell your data, do not use it for advertising, and do not use message content to train machine-learning models. Aggregated, non-identifying counts — such as total servers or commands run — may be displayed publicly, but never in a form that identifies a person or server.
04 What we never collect
- Private messages. Mei does not read, log or store direct messages. Commands used in DMs are processed ephemerally and are not retained.
- Voice or video content. Mei joins voice channels to transmit audio; it does not record, transcribe or store voice calls. Only voice-state events (join, leave, move, mute, deafen) are logged when a server enables voice logs.
- Message content at large. Mei reads message content only in channels where a server has explicitly enabled a feature that requires it — automod filtering, leveling XP, honeypot traps or chatbot replies. Content used for a filter check is evaluated and discarded; it is not archived.
- Your Discord credentials. Mei never asks for, and cannot receive, your password, token, email or payment details.
- Precise location, contacts or device fingerprints. This static website does not use advertising trackers or sell analytics data.
05 Third-party services
Mei relies on a small number of infrastructure providers to function:
- Discord — the platform that delivers events and commands to Mei. All interaction data originates from Discord’s API and is subject to Discord’s own policies.
- Lavalink audio nodes — used for audio streaming and filter processing. Nodes receive the voice channel and track identifiers needed to stream audio. They do not retain message history or personal profiles. Query terms sent to a music source (for example a search phrase) are forwarded to that source to resolve the track.
- SQLite persistent storage — Mei’s configuration and feature data is stored in an SQLite database on infrastructure controlled by the Mei team. Access is restricted to the bot process and authorised maintainers.
- Hosting and font delivery — this website is served as static files by GitHub Pages, and web fonts are loaded from Google Fonts. Those providers may process standard request metadata such as IP address, as described in their own policies.
We do not share stored data with third parties for marketing, and we do not transfer data to a new processor without updating this policy.
06 Data retention & removal
Data is retained only while it is needed for the feature that produced it, and is deleted when the bot is removed from a server or when a valid deletion request is fulfilled.
- Server removal: when Mei is kicked or leaves a server, that server’s configuration, leveling data, economy records, ticket archives, giveaways and anti-nuke settings are scheduled for deletion. The removal process completes automatically; a server that re-invites Mei starts from a clean configuration.
- User requests: a user may request deletion of the data tied to their user ID — including levels, economy balance, profile, family links, confessions, giveaway entries and whitelist entries — through the support server or by email.
- Ticket transcripts and logs: stored only when a server generates them, and removed when the server requests deletion or removes Mei.
- Operational logs: command metadata and error logs are kept for a short diagnostic window (generally up to 30 days) and then deleted or aggregated beyond identification.
- Abuse and blacklist records: where strictly necessary to protect the service, minimal identifiers may be retained after deletion to enforce a blacklist or comply with a legal obligation. These records are limited to what the enforcement requires.
Deletion requests are acknowledged within 7 days and completed within 30 days, except where retention is legally required. Some backups rotate on a fixed schedule; deleted records are purged as those rotations complete.
07 Security
Stored data is held on access-controlled infrastructure, credentials are scoped to the services Mei needs, and access to production systems is limited to maintainers. Data in transit between Discord, the audio nodes and Mei is encrypted using standard transport security.
No system is perfectly secure. If a breach affecting stored data occurs, we will notify affected server owners through the support server and, where required, Discord, without undue delay.
08 Your rights & contact
Subject to applicable law, you may request to:
- Access a copy of the data Mei holds that is linked to your user ID.
- Correct inaccurate profile, level or economy data.
- Delete your data, or have a server’s data deleted.
- Restrict or object to specific processing, such as automod logging.
- Withdraw consent for optional features at any time by disabling them.
To exercise any of these rights, open a ticket in the support server or email support@mei.bot with your Discord user ID and the server ID concerned. We may ask you to verify control of the account or server before acting on a request. You can also remove Mei from a server at any time, which stops all further collection for that server immediately.
09 Children’s privacy
Mei is intended for use in accordance with Discord’s minimum age requirement (currently 13 years old, or the minimum age of digital consent in your country). Mei does not knowingly collect data from anyone below that age. If you believe a minor has used the service, contact us and we will delete the associated data.
10 Changes to this policy
This policy may be updated as Mei’s features change. Material changes are announced in the support server and reflected in the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continuing to use Mei after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. If you disagree with a change, remove Mei from your server and request deletion of your data.
Questions about this policy can be sent to support@mei.bot or raised in the support server.
